Our company, PRODUCTOS AGROPECUARIOS LA MONTANA, was established in Mariquita, Tolima, in 2020 during the pandemic, in response to the need to contribute to the development of the region and the country. La Montana's initial economic activity was the cultivation of tropical fruits such as papaya and the continuation of previously established crops such as Lorena avocado and mangosteen. These activities were carried out during 2020, 2021, and part of 2022. During this time, more than 10 farmers were employed, who were trained to carry out field activities under Good Agricultural Practices, always safeguarding their personal safety and the environment. Despite producing and marketing excellent-quality fruit, with the added benefit of being GAP-certified, La Montana suffered the consequences of the marketing challenges faced by all Colombian farmers. The income received does not cover production costs, and during harvest season, marketing is difficult to the point of losing production. Noticing these difficulties, we decided to seek a solution that added value to the products we offer and those offered by the region's farmers. Dehydrating fruit proved to be the ideal solution. We have been working since late 2023 to install a dehydration plant with the capacity to process 2 tons of fresh fruit per day. Dehydrating fruit preserves it for much longer, and it is easier and more economical to transport without refrigeration. This has allowed us to meet the needs of international markets that do not have easy access to fresh fruit. This new line of business has allowed us to integrate small farmers into the value chain to create 100% natural, high-quality products, generating formal employment for the Mariquiteña community.
